The Earth Structure is being constructed for Uncommon Good, a Claremont non-profit, Uncommon Good’s Mission Statement is:  “The mission of Uncommon Good is to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty and to work for the restoration of our planet. These two goals are intertwined, since the alleviation of poverty depends upon having a healthy earth with enough resources to support everyone.

We accomplish these goals by helping underprivileged children succeed in school and go to college, by supporting young doctors who are bringing health and wellness into under-served communities, and through a variety of environmental initiatives.

85% + of the structure is earth gathered from the site. The building feels like it has sprouted, or grown naturally from the site. The walls are at least 2 feet thick, and the building is oriented to the south to absorb the heat from the sun. It is designed to allow the sun to come into the building in the winter and to provide shade to keep the summer sun out. The Earth Structure will provide thermal comfort throughout the year with very little external energy input. Earth-Air tunnels and a wind cooling tower will cool the building in the summer.

The earth-cement vault roof structure will support enough soil to plant Scrub Oaks and other native plants. When the building is finished the native plant landscape will climb up the walls and over the roof structure; this building will indeed be one with the Earth.

You drive into the Church’s parking lot which is behind two banks that are on Foothill Blvd, in the parking lot there is a sign pointing to the left for the Preschool and “The Round Building”, follow that sign and keep driving to the rear of the property. When you are at the back parking lot you cannot miss the structure.

A good map to follow is the Google Map to the Pre-School which shows the parking lot to the rear of the church property.
